Edition, place of publication and country of publication

Especially for books, information regarding edition, place of publication and country of publication should be added. Particularly for new editions, it is necessary to allow comparisons to earlier editions by providing information on the edition.

Edition

When supplying information on the edition, you can provide the type of edition, number of edition and an edition statement.

  • Edition type (in ONIX 3.0 EditionType or x419) allows you to define whether this is an abridged or censored edition. Possible ONIX codes are found on code list 21. The entry on edition type is repeatable.
  • Edition number (EditionNumber or b057) is a numerical value defining your edition. Please provide at most a four-digit figure for the edition number.
  • As an edition statement (EditionStatement or b058), you can provide a short description of your edition. Please avoid entering “edition”.

The information that a book is the second edition, which is also illustrated (ILL) and unabridged (UBR) is entered as follows.

ONIX 3.0 Short
<x419>UBR</x419>
<x419>ILL</x419>
<b057>2</b057>
<b058>Illustrated and unshortened Edition</b058>
ONIX 3.0 Reference

<EditionType>ILL</EditionType>
<EditionNumber>2</EditionNumber>
<EditionStatement>Illustrated and unshortened Edition</EditionStatement>

Place of publication

The place of publication is where the title is being published. Because any given title may be published simultaneously in several places, this entry is repeatable.

That a title is being published in New York is to be entered as follows.

ONIX 3.0 Short
<b209>New York</b209>
ONIX 3.0 Reference
<CityOfPublication>New York</CityOfPublication>

Country of origin

The country of origin may be provided either as supplementary to the place of publication, or in its stead. This entry may not be repeated. If your product has multiple places of publications in different countries, please choose a primary country of origin.

Please use the country codes from code list 91.

A product originating in the US is to be defined as follows.

ONIX 3.0 Short
<b083>US</b083>
